With the San Gabriels still recovering from the Station Fire and Mt. Pinos off-limits for the short term - it's on to the Glendora Mountain Road Shuttle. That's right the shuttle is back. The trail is a mix of wide open, "flowy" fire road to over grown, technical and rocky single track. It is simple: go fast the ride is advanced, go slow to reasonably paced the trail is beginner to intermediate. Yes the trail is safe for beginners. If you have never ridden a mountain bike before, we will set you up with a buddy to ride down. There are several options to GMR: the main road, the Big Dalton cut-off and what I call the "Go" option. All options start at the intersection of Glendora Mountain Road and the Monroe Truck Trail. After a few miles of skimming the ridge-line, the trail gives way from wide fire road to 'sinuousy' single-track and 'dives' into the canyon. The trail twists and turns throws rocks at you and is generally what we've come to expect of the San Gabriels. After a few miles of outstanding, flowy, and fast single track, the trail flattens - for a moment and provides some options. To the West continues the Monroe Truck Trail, it wraps around the spine of the mountain and dumps you into a rock garden which you follow to the Glendora Mountain Road. To the South is "Go". It's simple, steep, rutted, loose and rocky. Once you start it you cannot stop until you reach the bottom - Poppout Trail. Half-way through "Go" a single-track appears from the East - follow it - I think - into Big Dalton Canyon. Depending on how you approach the trail it is about 45 minutes from the top to the bottom but that is taking liberal breaks, enjoying the view and discussing routes. It is only 5.9 miles - do the math. . . Difficulty: Advanced - Beginner Trail type : Fire Road to Single Track to Rock Gardens Logistics : Shuttle Distance: 5.9 miles Altitude Change: ~ 2,426 ft Gear: Anything from a well maintained hybrid to a 40lbs downhill machine will do. Dual shocked X/Cty to All-Mountain bikes will do the best as there is some climbing (~100 yards, 100' elevation gain easy to accomplish in the middle chain-ring). Wear long pants and shin guards as my scratched up and 'poison oaked' legs will tell you. If you have the other pads and the full-face bring 'em. I still wear clip-ins and get laughed at. But it is a mixed bag of riding. Go with what you are comfortable with. Details: This is our first time doing the shuttle here. We need to be 'overly' sensitive to the community and vibe so we can come back. With that said, RSVP only - no pickups on the day of. We will start at 8:30 and shuttle until sunset. We will limit the RSVPs to 14 riders - all day riders will have priority. Cost:$20 for one run $30 for all day. Full refunds are provided until the Friday night before 9AM 6 November.
