Mid-Week Update

Well the weather is back - eh?  A couple of you have asked about the mountain bike rides and activities this week.  Ironically, my bike is in the shop and my forks are being overhauled, that is why I cannot attend this week's rides.  While the rides have not been canceled use your noggin - do you need to be riding in this heat?  There is a great deal to be done in the gym that has air conditioning, balance balls and medicine balls.  I am jus' sayin'.

Dang - one of our own is in hospital with some serious injuries from mountain biking.  You won't get the details from me but I am going to ask that you send Chris, one of our organizers some love - (http://www.scoaoutdoors.net/christopher82/)  Chris S - not to be confused with Chris Ashford from SCOA.

This weekend, a couple folks made it to the Weed Patch for a little mountain biking.  Check out one of the climbs - http://www.scoaoutdoors.net/MarkWarrick/videos/497

Until then stay cool - Chris A. @ SCOA

Announcement - SCOA TV is in Alpha

A few days ago SCOA began testing a live video stream.  While we are happy with the results there are some issues.  Still - go check it out - http://www.scoaoutdoors.net/userpage.php?page_id=123 The idea behind SCOA TV is to show you what's happening with SCOA.  If you have never been mountain biking, you can take a look at what mountain biking is about.  If you have never been scuba diving, rock climbing or . . . get the picture?

Initially, SCOA TV will have three types of shows: 1) live events (when cell coverage permits), 2) pre-recorded - footage of SCOA members out there doing there thing and 3) live in the studio: we will have interviews with activity organizers from all over So.Cal., gear reviews and demos.

Our goal is to keep it interesting and engaging.  We need your help!  If you shoot video while you are mountain biking, skiing/riding or doing almost anything outdoors, upload it to SCOA: http://www.scoaoutdoors.net/user_video.php (you need to be logged in to upload).  Video that is uploaded will be linked and streamed through out the day.

Shop owners, gear providers, guides - if you have something to say put it on video!  While we are still working on the business guidelines, we belive there is an opportunity to raise awareness of what is happening in the community in an informative and entertaining way and no we are not talking about infomercials :-)

At the end of the week, we will edit the streamed video into a highlights reel.  Think the ESPN of Southern California extreme sports community! The highlight reel will be streamed as well as added to the site's video archive.

We hope you are as excited about it as we are.  As the dust settles, look for schedule/guide to upcoming "shows"!

Enjoy your weekend!  See you tomorrow at G L O W !

Raging Mammoth What's Happening Here

Hold on to your handle bars as summer is going out with a bang!  We just got back from an e p i c mountain biking adventure: Mammoth Mountain  - Downieville - Downieville - Mammoth Mountain.  Close to 200 miles of riding and 40,000' of vertical.  Did I mention 80% of it was single-track?  Heaven!  Check out the videos.

Friday Adventure Hike - Tahquitz/Lily Rock blasted off!  Based on the pictures and new faces it looks like the event rocked!  For you core hikers that like adventure, only a few more weeks before the crew heads to Kili.

Adventure Hike - Tahquitz/Lily Rock

Did you learn to cayoneer on one of SCOA's outings?  Perhaps you went to one of the beginning canyoneering classes or maybe to The Rock Gym but haven't been canyoneering with us because you don't have gear.  Maybe cash-flow is a little tight and walking into Adventure 16 with your credit card isn't practical well how about some used gear?  Our friends at ATS are having a used gear sale.

Finally, our Monday Wednesday and Friday Fitness Buddies group is getting bigger.  Monday's workout was tough as nails but Matt, Laura and Chris made it.  Who would have thunk that: (three sets of each) - 1) one legged ball toss, 2) ball toss on BOSU ball, 3) step ups, and 4) one legged 'squat' on plyo-box would be such a challenge.  Oh and no weight was abused in the making of this workout.  Wednesday and Friday are hikes.  Come on out!

Survival Class
EVENT - 13 Noc 2010
After coming back from SCOA's Ecuadorian Rain Forest Expedition, I reevaluated my survival skills and experience level. Sure I went through the US Navy's Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape program which is one of the best money can't buy and I am grateful for it. However equipment has changed and application of the equipment has changed. So. . . It is time for a refresher. Anyone want to go to survival school?

Mid-Week Update

Bungee!
Haiyell yes we have schwag! More on that in a sec.  I hope your week is going well and that you are resting, stretching, doing gear maintenance so you are ready to charge this weekend!

Last week we started Monday Wednesday Friday Fitness buddies - this week we are charging forward.  While there are only three of us here is what we have done.  Monday a big 4 mile hike - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/48908454.  Some of did bonus altitude, others turned around and were out of there by 1PM.

Today we hit the gym and did a few balance ball routines.  No weights  only a 5 kg. medicine ball, balance ball and a 1 minute timer.  As I sit in my office chair, I am feeling muscles I didn't know I had!

Monday we will back at it as I am out of town starting tomorrow (So many adventures so little time!).  The workouts are fun and go by quick.  If you are in the area stop by!  Fitness Buddies!

Two big updates: 1st Teton Gravity Research hooked SCOA up with some tickets to their Deeper screening in Hollywood 08 October. If you haven't seen the trailer - get on it.  In the interim, block the calendar for the screening.  Also stay tuned for another SCOA contest as we will be giving those tickets away shortly!

2nd:  Liftopia hooked up SCOA with $5 gift cards - discounts for your next lift ticket.  We are super excited to be working with Liftopia and as the dates to our ski/ride trips firm up, we will let you know how to purchase discounted tickets.

As summer slows down, winter picks up.  Winter 2011 is going to be epic!  A little La Nina will make it interesting but cold and wet - bring it on!
La Nina

Looking for something to do Thursday through Sunday?  Join us on the Mammoth - Downieville - Downieville - Mammoth mountain biking road trip!  We have room for two more bikes.  We leave early tomorrow morining.  Consider this THE trip to be on for mountain biking this summer.

Ski/Ride Flix for 2010
VIDEO - 16 Sep 2010
It's that time of the year - ski/ride movies are out. There are three that SCOA is watching with delight. Light the Wick by TGR - one word I N T E N S E. There was an POV out-take of someone being dug out of an avalanche. The music is spot on too. Eye Trip and MSPs - The Way I see it both look great too. Don't get caught slippin'! They will be here then gone just like that.

Cannell Trail, Kernville
EVENT - 18 Sept 2010
Cannell is not for everyone. It is 24 miles long and has 2000 ft of climbing at an elevation of between 7500 and 9200 ft. It also has 9000 ft of descending. The operator suggests a riding ability of advanced intermediate or above and you must be in good riding shape. There is no quick "bailout" on this ride.
The Surival Class is already 1/2 full!  If you are interested in attending, I encourage you to step up - now.  When the class is full.  This is not to be confused with the other $150 survival class.  This two day course is $100 and is taught by an adventure race coach professional!

InterbikeAccording bikeradar.com and Bike Retailer Industry News, Interbike is heading back to Aneheim for 2010. La NiƱaLast year El Nino brough epic ski/ride conditions to California.  My last day on the slopes was Memorial Day weekend but many of SCOA clinets rode until July. . .

This year, it is gonna be different.  Scientists are prediciting a La Nina winter.  It is supposed to be colder and wetter than normal especially in Alaska, Canada, the Pacific Northwest and the Northern Rockies.

Here is the part that hurts Californians -  "with warmer and drier than normal conditions across much of the South. Blocking high-pressure systems over the northern Pacific Ocean can prevent storms from making their way down the West Coast, especially in the fall and early winter, sending most of the moisture into Washington, British Columbia and the northern Canadian and US Rockies" the article states.

Don't dispair, as it turns out for Californians it is a mixed bag, "it can go either way. . . some years have been good snow fall and others not so good."

Bottom line start doing your snow dnace today!

The sunshine is back!

What are you doing this weekend? I was going to take some time off this week then it snowed. That is right, just before leaving for Downieville it snowed. While not a show stopper, we postponed the adventure until next week. Mammoth and Teton Pass pictured here.

Mammoth Mountain September 9th Teton Pass September 9th

While we are on the subject, are you ready for ski/ride season this year? You have your pass, you have your board(s) but do you have the strength? Do you have things worked out with 'bossy' for a day here and there to make long weekends happen?  Things to think about.

In the interim, lots going over the next couple of days. If you climb, be sure to catch up with the Lone Pine Peak crew this weekend. The photos and write up look amazing. Canyoneering folks - where you at? Christian just posted Bonita Canyon caynoneering adventure Saturday. In 2010 we sent some 40 people through canyoneering classes. The classes were set up to get more of you out of these FREE canyoneering events. . .

Sunday - is anyone heading to the concert at Peter Strauss Ranch? Does anyone fancy a hike? We are heading up to and past the Bridge to Nowhere on Sunday.

Finally next week, we are hitting up Mammoth Mountain, Downieville and NorthStar at Tahoe for some downhill mountain biking.  If you can escape from work Thursday and Friday - come join us.  Hit me up for details.

Canyoneering Bonita Canyon
Event - 11 Sep 2010
Great Day of Canyoneering! We will be doing the Bonita Canyon which contains 4 rappels, the largest being 160'! 2-3 miles and at least 5 hours! If you have questions drop Christian a line. You will need your own gear and to be clear this is not a class.

Bridge to Nowhere
Event - 11 Sep 2010
It is about ~ 10mile hike round trip through streams, up and around boulders as well as fallen trees. The last time I did it we all got wet, sweaty, dirty and tired. Personally, I haven't done this hike in awhile, I am out of shape and looking for an excuse to hit it.

Announcing

SCOA was recently invited to attend a survival class with Toby Cowern.  Perhaps a new name to us in the United States but he has been training survival classes for many years in Europe.  We will be on private land so logistics will be easier.  If you missed the last few classes we have had, you will not want to miss this one.

Hey SCOA!

We are really excited to see more photos and video on our website. Your POV video and creative and awe inspiring still photos are amazing. Indeed keep it up. We are expecting some gift cards from Liftopia and the chance to work with some exciting local vendors - so your SCOA will have a chance to give back! Stay tuned SCOA members.

In the interim here are a few of my favorites for this week:

Do you know the way to Zion?
VIDEO - 06 Sept 2010
Pandora808 has been to Zion no less than three times this summer. Each time the photos and video get more creative and compelling. In this video, Pandora808's crew takes off from Santa Monica and heads to Zion where they show you deep canyons and big raps. This is only part one. We have seen some of the other content CAINT wait to see the rest.

Snorkeling at Casino Point
VIDEO - 5 September 2010
Catalina has some amazing snorkeling. I know I know it is kitchy too but get over it - snorkeling at Casino Point is pretty cool. I am digging this video of padora808 and friends freediving (snorkeling) Casino Point. Check out the Garibaldi the goldfish looking thing.
Pasadena Mudrun
VIDEO - 06 Sept 2010
An inside look at the Pasadena Mudrun. Well actually there wasn't a lot of mud but it looks like fun anyway. Next season, SCOA will have a comprehensive 'Mudrun' events from San Diego to San Francisco.

BTW - I am taking the rest of the week off from "work".  Paul S and I are on a mountain biking expedition on Thrusday:  Mammoth Mountain on Thursday and Sunday, Downieville in-between.  I cannot wait!  We will have daily photo and video postings as well as a real-time GPS track - stay tuned!
