MT Lowe , El Prieto, Ken Burton, Sunset, San Merrill’s , Red Box, Arroyo, Millard, Inspiration Point, and Mt. Wilson have been hit by the fires and now it’s moving towards Chilao and Newcomb Ranch!

A good friend (Peter Porras) of mine just sent me some amazing photos from the Station Fire. The focus in taking/organizing them was to share what our mountain biking and hiking places look like now. It is tragic. El Prieto, Brown Mountain and the Ken Burtan trails, from what I can tell have been completely defoliated.

Based in what NPR was saying this morning Chilao, Newcomb's Ranch and Mt. Wilson are next.

Many of you know that at the beginning of 2009 the Forestry Service closed access to Chainey Trail from Markham Saddle due to a landslide. Like the Mt. Wilson Toll Road, it will take a few years to sort who will clear the slide then another few years to actually do it. Because it is closed the firefighters cannot access it to fight the fire. . .

Anyway, based on what I am hearing from the group, no one has been hurt from SCOA and no one has lost their house! Thank goodness! Of course our hearts go out to those that have. Continued courage to the professionals out there who are risking their lives for our safety!

SCOA Citizens - lets have a Gatorade and Arrowhead Bottled Water drive!

That's right, bring your unopened, Gatorade or Arrowhead bottled water - any size to:
a) 2928 4th Street Studio #9, Santa Monica Chris Ashford 310.230.5520
b) 45 South Parkwood Avenue, Pasadena (Use the north driveway and go all the way to the back. You will see a SCOA sign. Don't worry the neighbors know you are commin'.).
c) Good to Go Fitness - 19235 Ventura Boulevard, Tarzana, John Bocobo - 818/745/6019
d) Precision Rehabilitation - 3294 E. Spring St., Long Beach, Office (562) 988-3570 We will collect the donations and drop them off at the command post Saturday AM late morning. We are working on additional drop off locations: Pasadena, Long Beach and Covina.

If you have cycles and can help me with delivery - drop me a line: punkfish@opticaledge.com With over 1600 people in our group, potentially our donation could be pretty large.

We need to have all the donations by 8AM Saturday.

Remember: we need to be sure that all bottles are in sealed cases or they might reject them as tampered. While there are many other brands of water, we'd prefer you purchase Arrowhead simply because they get their water from the San Gabriels, the very mountains the fire fighters are working hard to save!

Spread the word - we can help!

Mt. Pinos Downhill Festival
Updated 2 year(s) ago
In case you missed it, we had a fantastic time at Mt. Pinos last weekend. First the weather was perfect. It wasn't too cool but it wasn't hot either. Second, it wasn't crowded at all. Not only are people not wearing white after Labor Day, apparently they aren't coming out to play either. Finally, the people that came out were awesome. Marcela came down from Santa Barbara and Scott 'n' Sara drove up from San Diego. Of course the 3F Crew was in effect!

If you have never been to Mt. Pinos - you are missing out. There is something for everyone, really. Mt. Pinos doubles as a X-Country skiing place so there are miles and miles of hiking trails - separate from the mountain biking trails.

The mountain biking course is 7 miles long with about 2500 feet of elevation change. The McGill trail is unique that no matter what level of rider you are - you'll get something unique out of it. Those that can flow down the hill without touching their brakes, the rocks, logs, berms and tree branches provide the perfect playground for some sick Free - Riding and Downhill. For the rest of us, there is just enough for a challenge but not too much to overwhelm. Essentially, the faster you go the more challenging it gets. Are you super slow? It is possible to pick your way through a beginner's paradise!

Marcela, Paul, Dominik and Chris G caught the first load up and got 6 rides in for the day. 7 miles times 6 rides - 42 miles of amazing single-track bliss. While not everyone had the energy for 6 runs everyone got their fill.

Camping at Chula Vista was a little like a box of chocolates - you never know what you are going to get. In the future, if the Mt. Pinos or McGill campgrounds are open that is where we will stay.

Sunday was more of the same MTBing heaven. We had some added spice - guests. Scott and Sara drove up from San Diego to taste the good at Mt Pinos. While the morning was full of people by 10:30 AM the riff raff were at home with a cold one watching the game. Perfect - it gave me time to put on the helmet, cleat in and barrel down the hill. I cannot wait to go back. . .

Jumping from a hot air balloon

It all started after drinking a beer. "I really want a picture of me jumping from a hot air balloon." You would think funny looks and statements like, 'you are crazy' would follow. Not my friends. In fact quite the contrary, my buddy Derrek said, "if you buy, I'll fly!" And so the great balloon adventure began.

The final section is Trabuco Creek Rd connecting back to CVS pharmacy all fire roads.
Cannell Plunge
Updated 1 year(s) ago
Cannell is not for everyone. It is 24 miles long and has 2000 ft of climbing at an elevation of between 7500 and 9200 ft. It also has 9000 ft of descending. The operator suggests a riding ability of advanced intermediate or above and you must be in good riding shape. There is no quick "bailout" on this ride. If you can't finish the ride it could take several hours before someone could get you down. You must have something with you to eat and plenty of water.

The first 16 miles starts at 9200 feet and continues up and down, never going below 7500 ft., so it is not roasting hot. There is a natural mountain spring at Big Meadows which is about 9 miles in and water at the cabin in Cannell Meadows. Any other water would have to be filtered. The ride will take 4-7 hours to complete. The shuttle ride to the top from Kernville takes about 1.5 hours.

The most famous part of this ride is the Plunge which drops 5000 ft in 8 miles (7500 ft elevation to 2500). The bottom 4 miles is where the Bull fire just burned but the trail is in great shape. In fact I think it is better than before the fire. As you descend this part of the trail it will gradually get hot. It's all single track, some of which has exposure. Have a look in the photo albums for pictures from recent weeks as well as last fall.

There are sections where the ground is quite soft. We've found a fairly big tire with big knobs is best (like riding Mammoth's pumice). There are rocky descents that make a bike with some good travel (4+ inches)nice.

Trail description: There will be class 3 and 4 sections and several very technical climbs/downclimbs - all without a rope. Advanced hikers with class 3 and 4 experience only (or rock climbers). The hike is what climbers use to gain access to Lily Rock and then to descend when done. We expect to take about 6-8 hours car-to-car - bring your head lamps just in case :)

Roadtrip: Mammoth to Downie...
Updated 1 year(s) ago
What can I say? Words can't explain how great it was. We did Mammoth Thursday, Downieville Friday and Saturday and Mammoth Sunday on the way home. Downieville is absolutely a must do shuttle. 14 miles of riding through lush forest and along crystal clear rivers. We got 2 runs in on Saturday and 3 on Sunday thanks to Craig the shuttle owner who took us up at 7:30 on Saturday. High speed rock and roll and a total of 5 pinch flats to prove it, despite running 40 lbs in my tires and 50 in Chris's. Long drive, 10 hours, but we broke it up by stopping at Mammoth up and back so it didn't seem all that long. I'd do it again in a heart beat.

Outdoor Rock Climbing - HVP

It will be in the 70's in the SB mountain area, why not get away from the LA heat and climb at the Holcomb Valley Pinnacles?

NOT A CLASS. NOT FOR THE FIRST TIMER. NOT A GUIDED COURSE. NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SAFETY. YOU MUST BE BELAYED CHECKED AND HAVE AT LEAST YOUR HARNESS AND SHOES.

I'll limit the group to 4 people per rope and currently I need one more lead climber. All members are on the wait list until I move you over manually.

We'll be on the move throughout the day as we chase sun/shade and uncrowded walls. IF you don't meet us at the appointed time, then it is up to you to find us. Cell coverage is spotty at best.

Road conditions: I have seen sedans on the road, but I don't recommend it! It will be paved for about 10 minutes and then 30-40 of dirt and rocks. You won't need a 4X4 but you shouldn't take your Mini either.

Turkey Day GMR Shuttle

Gobble gobble gobble! Happy Thanksgiving! What could be a better way to spend your Thanksgiving morning than to do multiple downhill runs at GMR?

If we can get shuttle service for the day, I'll update this post with further details. But assuming we have to do it ourselves, here's how it works:

Everyone shows up with a vehicle capable of transporting at least one other person and one bike. We LOVE trucks!

We cram as many bikes and people into as few cars as possible and drive to the top. We hope on our bikes and ride down one of three options: beginner, intermediate or advanced. All the options are equally fun for their own reasons!

Once we reach the bottom, we drive the remaining vehicles back to the top to get the first cars, drive back down, drive back up, and repeat. The more cars we have the fewer times we have to drive up to retrieve vehicles. Get it?

So, basically that means: if you don't have to carpool, don't! It also means, don't show up thinking you're gonna get a free ride to the top without participating in driving people back to their cars!

As in past years, there will likely be slower and faster riders. We'll split up on the way down but no matter how slow you are, there will be someone right there with you. Don't sweat it! We know people have different experience levels.

While I wouldn't recommend this to a total newbie, most beginner riders (with at least a few months of trail experience) have no problem on this trail. It's almost entirely downhill no matter which way you go. The basic route takes most people 45 mins on their first ride down to get used to the trail. And I've heard of times of 18 minutes for some of the die-hard downhillers! Again, don't worry about how fast you're going - just enjoy the ride!

The trail requires getting off the bike now and then and has some big exposure. There are downed trees and washouts along the way but all were negotiable and t he ride was awesome. Our merry little band moved right along and we had no injuries or mech. failures. This is a trail that we should have radios in the group and bells would be good as well. Quite a lot of hikers on the lower part. Trail is suffering from the rain a bit and will need some work. Let's do it again soon

Nice trail climbing up, but the downhill could have flowed better. the trail would have a big berm, then no berm on the next turn. you really had to watch your speed so you don't wash out like i did. but once you know trail, you're good. it is a good beginner trail. nice to see some beginners come out. great job, guys! thanks Wayne!
Death Valley - Wind, rain, ...
Updated 8 month(s) ago
Stephen had been planning this event for months - and it happened without a hitch. Rain, nor snow, nor high winds put a damper on the adventure spirit. 12 SCOA adventurers ran Death Valley on the Super Moon weekend.

The photo album is a combination of Hapkidoist and flyby250's photos. This super album is amazing. The scenery, the people the story - wow!

It isn't even barely spring yet and SCOA is out rockin' it in the elements.
